The roll of a Geisha is often misunderstood in the west. The word geisha translates as "person of the arts". A trainee (Maiko) must learn dance, music, tea ceremony and calligraphy, also learn to become a good conversationalist to be able to entertain clients. Most Geisha in Japan live and work in the Gion district of Kyoto and the selection of images below depict the area.
