Tidal Race, Bagh Dhail Mor, Isle of Lewis
I was born in 1963, though a native of Yorkshire, now live in Cumbria. I have always been interested in art but cannot recall when the photographic bug first bit me. It may have been when I was given an inexpensive camera at age 10 by my father Ron and Uncle Harold, and was able to follow them on many a photographic expedition. Both men worked for the BBC not as cameramen but as engineers and my passion for photography was influenced by them.
I am often asked if I work digitally, though I prefer using film I now use both film and digital capture.
The pictures you see replicate the conditions of the day as near as possible without enhancement.
The vast majority of my work is shot with three hard working Leica cameras, one of which now has a digital back attached plus a Mamiya 645 medium format outfit and recently aquired Canon EOS5d now joins the range of cameras used. Whatever you choose it's the end result that matters.
One of my photographic heroes is the late great Henri Cartier Bresson and like him I aim to catch an image at that decisive moment in time to show what we have and if not careful will loose forever.
